We go through our daily lives responding physically and emotionally to the concept of space. These often unrealized responses to our environment shape how we behave, think, and communicate. The Living Room takes the idea of personal living space and transports it to the public space of the museum, leading us to question how we respond to different presentations of space. The first section of the exhibition is a transitional area that appears the most like a traditional museum exhibition; however, the space then unfolds as a private living space and outdoor scene complete with a tree house. Much like one’s own home, it is hard to imagine this space without human interaction. Therefore each room invites the audience to interact, occupy, converse, and lounge.
The first section of the exhibition, presents Paul Coors’s video installation which draws from the language of advertising and interweaves the different facets of Coors’s creative practice, which encompasses design and curation. Within the living space various furniture and design elements were created by Guy Michael Davis, Terence Hammonds, Katie Parker, and the design collective Such + Such. Featured within the exhibition is a fireplace created by Davis, Hammonds, and Parker in collaboration with the legendary Cincinnati-based Rookwood Pottery Company.
